How to Have a Conversation (btw)

I was at a party the other night where young women were shouting about how much they liked the show Girls. There wasn’t much more to the interaction than what I’ve just stated. Each of them was naming each character one after the other and saying how much they liked them. For instance, “I like Jessa so much.” This is not a discussion, people. A discussion would be, for example: “I really appreciate how much depth they’ve started to develop for Jessa through expanding her backstory.” Or “I don’t think Shosh would have made out with that doorman. It was so out of character.” Or “I really like Jessa’s clothes. How can I start dressing like that?” Then your friend or companion or whomever you ended up next to at an apartment party would respond directly to your comments with their own thoughts. Yelling out that you like a character isn’t a discussion, it’s just a reenactment of your Facebook profile. Thanks for being here IRL, but you could have stayed home.Image
